What is the Uptown Arts District?

The Uptown Arts District is a vibrant part of downtown Michigan City known for its local businesses, creative energy, public art, and community events. Over time, it has grown into a destination for shopping, dining, gathering, and experiencing the character of the city.

The UAD brand represents the people and places that give this part of Michigan City its identity, including residents, businesses, artists, and guests. It evokes the neighborhood’s creative spirit and reflects the city center’s passion for the arts, culture, and community.

The district did not come together by accident. It was shaped through years of community-driven effort, creative placemaking, public programming, and downtown improvement initiatives that helped strengthen both the local economy and the identity of the area.

Much of that work was led by the Michigan City Mainstreet Association (MCMA), an independent volunteer-powered nonprofit organization that has helped guide events, public art, streetscape improvements, and small-business support efforts in the district for more than 15 years. The Uptown Arts District, shown in detail below, is the geographic area generally bounded from Wabash St. to Pine St. and from 11th St. to Trail Creek in Michigan City, Indiana
